SONIC RAY
30 September 2021 – 21 November 2021
Trinity Buoy Wharf | Greenwich Peninsula
Book tickets
Originally scheduled for 2020 and postponed due to the pandemic, Sonic Ray was commissioned by Artangel to mark the 20th anniversary of Longplayer.
The unique art experience, taking place on both sides of the river, will illuminate London’s only lighthouse at Trinity Buoy Wharf. There, the music of Longplayer will be encoded and transmitted as a powerful beam of green light and shone across the river Thames to Richard Wilson’s millennial sculpture Slice Of Reality.
Visitors can choose their starting point at either Trinity Buoy Wharf Lighthouse in Docklands or at Slice of Reality on the Greenwich peninsula, travelling between the two locations on a short ride aboard a chartered riverboat – all part of the experience.
Sonic Ray is presented as part of the Totally Thames Festival 2021 and can only be viewed after dark. All timed viewing sessions will take place after sunset.

THE LONGPLAYER CONVERSATION 2021
Online, presented in partnership with the British Library
27 October, 19:30 - 20:45
Booking is now open for British Library members, general release on 23 September
The Longplayer Conversations began in 2005 as a way of celebrating the vision behind Longplayer’s long term aspirations. Each year we invite leading cultural thinkers to conduct a public conversation inspired by the philosophical premise of Longplayer, a project which unfolds, in real-time, over the course of a millennium.
This year’s edition brings together two of the most important thinkers and cultural activists of our age for what promises to be a fascinating conversation, informed by their profound engagement with ecology, race and social justice.
Through the lens of Longplayer, they discuss moving towards global equity in human and non-human relations and how the Black Lives Matter movement is key to a properly green and socially sustainable future.
This online event, free to attend, will be introduced by the Chair of the Longplayer Trust, Gareth Evans. There will be a live Q&A with the speakers as part of the event.
